Why Buy A Merida Bike?
May 11, 2014
Merida Full Suspension Mountain Bike MTBMerida are one of the biggest bike manufactures in the world, last year they produced and sold 1.6 million bikes from their five factories worldwide. Merida also manufacture bikes for other companies, but focus mainly on designing and producing a wide range of their own bikes. Merida aim “to manufacture only beautiful, high quality bikes enabling anybody to reach their destination as pleasantly as possible”.
Origins
Merida started life in 1972, manufacturing bikes for other companies until 1988, when they began producing bikes under their own name. Having accrued invaluable knowledge and experience, Merida certainly know how to design and produce high quality bikes. As Merida make their own bikes, production costs are kept to a minimum and these savings are passed on to the consumers, making Merida bikes excellent value for money.
Testing
Merida develop bikes alongside their professional teams to ensure you receive a bike that has been thoroughly tested before it goes into production. The Merida teams include the Multivan Merida Biking Team who were involved in developing the Merida Big Seven Carbon Comp 3000 and the Lampre-Merida team whose input helped to develop the Scultura Carbon SL Team road bike and the Warp Carbon Team Di2. The feedback from the Velo Team helped to develop the 2014 One Forty 1 B and the One Sixty 1 full suspension mountain bikes. Each team consists of professional cyclists, who between them have won numerous races, series and even Olympic medals. The teams consist of riders from a variety of disciplines, including road cycling, mountain biking and dirt jumping. After riding the Merida bikes, riders pass their valuable feedback onto the designers who will then alter the bike; this process continues until the professional riders and designers are happy the performance of the bike cannot be improved. If you have any doubt of the testing process, here’s team rider, Dominik Raab, putting the Merida One Sixty 1 through its paces.

Product Review: Specialized Allez 2014
So, what has the Specialized Allez 2014 road bike got to offer? Quite frankly, a lot. The first thing that stands out is the price, at an attractive entry level price of £600, first impressions are already good.
Whether you’re looking for that branch between your mountain bike and an easygoing road bike, this could well be the answer. You might be looking for a quicker way to work or maybe to work on those racing legs, either way, the race inspired Specialized Allez is definitely worth taking into consideration.
Frame
Available in a stealth looking gloss black and red, the colour option is straight forward for me, (well that and the red matches some of my riding kit). Equally impressive is the other colour option of smooth gloss white. No matter what colour you go for, most significantly the frame does its job.
Specialized Allez 2014
Specialized know how to make frames, and have stuck with their winning formula from their ever popular 2013 model. Being crafted from premium butted A1 aluminium keeps the all important weight down, without compromising on stiffness. When inspecting the frame an amazing amount of attention to detail is visible. The way Specialized smooth over the welds at joints makes the frame that slicker.
Due to the fork being crafted from the same premium aluminium as the frame, it offers lightweight and precise steering. For even more of a lightweight and solid ride, why not check out the Allez’ big brother, the Allez sport. Introducing a carbon fork and upgraded components, it offers a slightly racier machine and for only £150 extra it’s well worth bearing in mind.
Kit
The 2014 Allez plays host to Shimano using their brand new Claris 2400 chainset, shifters and front and rear mech. Offering a twin ring set up on the front, with 50/34 tooth chainrings and an 8 speed Shimano cassette to the rear.
Overall providing 16 well ranged ratios with a balance between speed and climbing, specifically aimed for the entry level rider. Specialized’s own shallow bend bars add to the bikes comfort and their oversized nature means they also cater for those with a wider stance. The shallow drop can be seen as a gentle introduction to the bike, it doesn’t force you into the uneasy race position when dropping on the bars. Stopping power comes in the form of Tektro dual pivots. They are typically found on entry level road bikes due to their value for money and longevity.
Of course contact points are often down to personal opinion, such as the handlebars, bar tape, pedals and the saddle. For me, the Riva Road Gel saddle provided ample comfort balanced with support. To get the most amount of power from you and your bike, SPD’s are highly advised, however they aren’t essential, therefore flat pedals may be an easier introduction.Vavert Combinatiion Pedal
For the best of both worlds the Vavert Combination Pedal offers the ability of SPD and flat riding, all in one pedal. An upgrade to think about, with prices from only £23.09.
Overall
Specialized describe the Allez as ‘having pro level looks and having unrivalled speed without blowing up your wallet.’ Ultimately, I can’t argue with their description. The Allez provides a quick and responsive ride, with no negatives to talk of. With brand new Shimano products as standard and a highly rated frame, the price of just £600 provides excellent value for money.
An entry level road bike, a way to get to work quicker or a bridge between mountain biking and road cycling, it does all of these and more with ease, whilst keeping that low price tag.
Sounds pretty tempting, maybe?
